Getting to know more about Brooke – Dermal Clinician

You may know Brooke from her amazing work as one of our Dermal Clinicians here at the My Genesis Clinic in Canberra. You may already be following her story about studying a Bachelor of Dermal Sciences through Victoria University (she is now in her 3rd year of the degree!) Let’s get to know her better, and find out some fun facts about her.

How long have you been working at the CAPS Clinic?

I have been at the CAPS Clinic for 2 years

Any relevant training, workshops or conferences you have completed?

Being in the beauty industry for 16 years I quickly saw that certain skin conditions can not all be cured via topical application of treatments and products. These skin conditions drove me to delve deeper to find answers. I have completed a triple advanced diploma of naturopathy, nutrition and herbal medicine. I believe there are many links to internal health and skin conditions we see in the clinic.

Other training I have completed is CoolSculpting training which is a fat reduction procedure we offer here at the CAPS Clinic in Canberra. I have been doing continuous education through webinars and conferences, connecting with leading professionals from around the world.

The dermal industry is forever changing and it is so important to keep up to speed with what’s going on.

What is your particular passion in the dermal world?

My passion is the skin, inflammatory skin conditions and creating change to people’s lives… it is the most rewarding thing to be able to help people. A lot of the treatments we do as Dermal Clinicians can be life changing!

Any relevant committees/ community work?

I am a member of the ASDC Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians.

Three top tips for great skin?

  1. Cleanse and moisturise your skin morning and night. Avoid nasty ingredients!
  2. Wear SPF daily & reapply every 2 hrs – physical sunscreens are better than chemical sunscreens.
  3. Look after yourself! Manage stress, get enough sleep and eat a healthy diet. Make time for you!

What hobbies do you enjoy outside of work?

I have a few hobbies that I enjoy! These are soy candle making, yoga, skateboarding, snowboarding and surfing.

What do you enjoy about living and working in Canberra?

Canberra is close to the beach and the snow. It is great to bring up a family and very picturesque.

What is a ‘fun fact’ about yourself that you would like to share?

I love the beach and I love to travel!

What treatments do you provide for your CAPS clients?

Besides providing in-depth skin consultations for new clients and reviews for existing clients, I also offer Microdermabrasion, Peels and LaseMD, Dermaplaning, Dermafrac, Laser Genesis, Healite, CoolSculpting, Laser Hair Removal, diathermy, plus IPL

What are the most challenging skin concerns to treat? What are the most satisfying?

The most challenging are those that are driven by internal factors. Some of the most common are inflammatory skin conditions, which also can be the most rewarding when you figure out the root cause.

Besides skincare and products, what ways do you look after your skin?

Other ways I look after my skin is I drink plenty of water daily. I try and balance stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle and whilst being a mum of two young children, studying and working this all can be hard at times but I am constantly working of myself trying to create equilibrium in all aspects of my life. The secret is balance!
