How does CoolSculpting work?

Developed by Harvard University scientists, the science behind CoolSculpting is the discovery that subcutaneous fat cells are more vulnerable to the effects of cold than other surrounding tissue. This means the fat cells may be effectively targeted and destroyed by freezing them. Only fat cells are frozen, your healthy skin cells are unaffected.

Once frozen the fat cells become crystallised and they die. Then they are naturally eliminated from your body via the lymphatic system, the body’s own waste process, over the coming weeks.

This unique procedure of fat reduction (non-surgical body sculpting) is known as ‘cryolipolysis’. You can learn more about How It Works here.

Am I a suitable candidate for CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is ideal for those carrying small stubborn pockets of visible fat bulges in the submental area (under the chin), upper arms, bra fat, back fat, abdomen and flank (love handle), thighs and along with underneath the buttocks (also known as banana roll). It is not a form of weight loss, rather a non-surgical sculpting of trouble areas for those who are at, or very close to, their ideal weight.

Coolsculpting is a non-invasive way to reclaim your figure by reducing pockets of fat in common trouble spots that seem impossible to get rid of despite diet and exercise.

You are required to book an initial consultation at the Frosted Away Clinic in Canberra, where your CoolSculpting certified clinician will spend about an hour to discuss your goals and expectations, explain the procedure and risks, perform an assessment and discuss costs. The cost of the consultation is $100, redeemable on treatment sessions booked and taken within 14 days.

CoolSculpting is not for everyone. You should not have the CoolSculpting treatment if you suffer certain conditions including, but not limited to

  • cryoglobulinaemia (a blood protein disease)
  • cold agglutinin disease (a rare anaemic autoimmune disease)
  • paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria (a rare autoimmune disease)

CoolSculpting is not a treatment for obesity. As with any medical procedure, ask your registered medical practitioner if the CoolSculpting procedure is right for you.

CoolSculpting is not a weight loss solution or a substitute for surgical methods. Liposuction may be a better option for some clients, and can be discussed by booking a consultation with Dr Taylor on (02) 6282 1177.

What can I expect from CoolSculpting treatment?

On the day of your treatment, eat a light meal and stay hydrated before your treatment session, and bring your book, device or work to do whilst the procedure is performed. Wearing loose clothing is recommended, depending on the area being treated. Before photos will be taken (to be able to record your results).

Your clinician will measure and mark your skin in the area being treated, as to where the applicator will sit. Once you are laying down, a gel pad will be applied, it may be cool and a bit sticky. The vacuum applicator will then be applied which will suck the tissue in and this may be an unusual feeling, some pulling, tugging or pinching. The treatment will start and the area will feel very cold initially but then goes numb after a few minutes. Then you can relax, read or even do work, with your clinician close by, monitoring you and the equipment.

The treatment time depends on the number of areas being treated, but allow about an hour per treatment area. At the end of the treatment time, the applicator will be removed and the area massaged. Some people find this short massage uncomfortable but it increases the efficacy. If you have had multiple treatment cycles in a row, you may feel a little lightheaded but a drink and some time will see this pass quickly. Most people can return to work and normal activities immediately after treatment, but this may vary and may depend on the area treated or how many treatment cycles you have had.

Over the coming days to weeks you may have some swelling, tenderness, bruising and numbness in the area.

What other fat reduction and body sculpting options are there?

The CAPS Clinic offers a full suite of surgical procedures, including liposuction which is known for it’s transforming results in the area of fat reduction. These options can be discussed with Dr Taylor by booking a surgery consultation on (02) 6282 1177.

Is there any post treatment care following CoolSculpting?

Most people are able to return to work and other activities immediately following CoolSculpting treatment sessions. Your clinician will advise on any post treatment instructions.

Following the procedure, typical side effects include redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, skin sensitivity and numbness. Numbness can persist for up to several weeks. There may be a sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after submental (under chin) treatment. These effects are temporary and generally resolve within days or weeks.

Though rare, some additional side effects such as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (gradual enlargement of treated area), late onset pain, freeze burn, vasovagal symptoms (may include dizziness, sweating, fast or slow heart rate, nausea, paleness, etc), subcutaneous induration/hardened tissue, hyperpigmentation and hernia may also occur.

What can I expect regarding results from CoolSculpting?

Results can be seen as early as 3 weeks with most dramatic results around the 8 week mark. Results can take up to 8 weeks because it takes that long for your body to naturally dispose of the fat cells, so please take this into consideration when booking your consultation and treatment.

For best results you need to be at your ideal weight and comfortably maintaining it.

What is the approximate price range for CoolSculpting at Frosted Away?

The cost will depend on the number of cycles and treatments required to treat your troublesome area. Here at Frosted Away Clinic in Canberra, our CoolSculpting costs $750/cycle, with a ‘treatment’ generally consisting of multiple cycles. You may require more than one treatment. During your consultation you will receive a quote, which is valid for 3 months.

I've seen the results that can be achieved with the right clients... it's amazing the difference it can make, and so satisfying to know you've helped them achieve their goals!
