What can I expect from K-laser treatment?

1 or 2 treatments are generally sufficient to remove the mole or lesion. Each mole usually only takes a minute or two to remove. There can be some discomfort, with a sharp stinging sensation that lasts for a few seconds with each application of the laser to the treated area, but this settles quickly and by the end of the treatment on the mole or lesion, it can barely be felt. Local anaesthetic can be used if necessary.

Am I a suitable candidate for K-laser treatment?

Most benign moles and lesions can be treated, but you require a referral letter from your doctor or skin cancer specialist to show that your moles and lesions are benign, and are suitable to be removed using K-laser.⁣ A referral must be no older than 12 months (if your Dermal Clinician or Dermal Therapist sees a spot of concern they may refer you for another assessment before agreeing to treat the lesion).

A combined initial consultation and treatment session will be booked with one of our Dermal Clinicians or Dermal Therapists, which is allocated for an hour. There is a $100 initial consultation fee, but for clients referred from Dr Taylor or 360uv, our skin check clinic, the fee is waived. If your referral is from an external skin cancer clinic or your GP, the $100 fee applies.

Other options for clients who are not suitable for K-laser may include surgical excision, punch or shave biopsy. Is there any post treatment care following K-laser?

• After treatment there will be a small dressing applied over the treated area which must remain intact and be kept dry for 48 hours. Avoid showering until the day after the procedure.
• Avoid activities that cause excessive perspiration for 48 hours post treatment. Avoid pools, spas and saunas for 1 week following treatment.
• Once you remove the dressing, you will see a small scab that has form. Do not pick or disturb the scab. When showering, do not rub the area. Pat the area when drying.
• You can apply a medical silicone gel daily, which is used to improve healing and minimise the risk of scarring. You can purchase this from the My Genesis Clinic.
• Avoid using any retinol based products, manual exfoliation or the use of any exfoliating ingredients such as AHA’s and BHA’s for up to 4 weeks.
• After 48 hours, apply sunscreen daily for 3 months to treated area, reapplying every 2 hours if outdoors.
• Do not use talc based makeup for 72 hours.
• Avoid the use of irritants on the treated area (e.g. astringents, perfumes, deodorants, scented lotions etc).

Your Dermal Clinician/Therapist will explain post treatment care and give you a leaflet on thorough post care instructions.

What can I expect regarding the results from K-laser?

Generally results are seen immediately, however often there is some redness of the skin that will fade within a few weeks.

Your Dermal Clinician/Therapist will review your result 4 weeks post treatment to determine if a second treatment in necessary.

K-laser Risks

• You may experience discomfort/pain which includes burning, stinging and radiating heat
• Redness, swelling and a mild sunburn/heat sensation are normal after the treatment and can last a few hours to a few days
• Lesions may crust and or darken as part of the healing process. It is important to not disturb the crusts and these will typically slough off in 7-14 days. The skin may be pink in the area ad usually resolves within a few months
• Bruising, outbreak of herpes/cold sores, pimples, irritation, hive-like reaction, crusting, flaking or undesirable hair reduction are not common but still considered normal side effects of treatment
• With vascular treatments, hemosiderin staining (iron leaking into tissue from blood breakdown) may occur. This usually resolves over time, but may be permanent
• Adverse events such as blisters, burns, infection, scarring, hyper and hypo pigmentation are extremely rare but can occur from treatments and in some cases may be permanent. If you experience these, please contact us as soon as possible.

What is the approximate price range for K-laser removal of moles?

Prices vary, approximately $150 to $350 per mole, with discounts applying for multiple lesions treated in one session.
