The Benefits of Skin Needling

Skin needling aka ‘collagen induction therapy’ is a popular skin treatment being performed in clinics across the globe. The benefit of this treatment is well documented among research and there is no wonder this treatment is well sort after. We all age differently and this can be associated with outside and internal assaults we expose our bodies to daily, plus our genetics play a role in how someone ages as well. Skin needling is a treatment many are reaching for due to its minimal downtime and impressive skin rejuvenation results whilst also being a cost-effective method to target the presentations of aging in the skin [1].

What is skin needling?

Skin needling involves using a roller or pen like device to cause a controlled micro injury to the skin. This is turn creates a wound and induces pinpoint bleeding which initiates the cascade of wound healing phases (inflammation, proliferation, and regeneration) resulting is the stimulation of growth factors TGF 1,2,3 & results in increased dermal collagen, collagen remodelling and in turn thickening the epidermis and dermis. Due to the growth factors that are released during this treatment it results in tissue regeneration instead of scarring [2,3,4]

Indications of use:

Skin needling can be used for a range of skin concerns including:

  • Scarring
  • Stretch marks
  • Fine lines and wrinkles (face & body)
  • Pigmentation including melasma
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Large pores
  • Burns
  • Transdermal drug delivery

How many treatments involved?

We recommend 3-6 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart depending on the area and skin condition we are treating.

Post treatment:

Post treatment the area will be red and swollen. The skin sensation will be that of sunburn. Post treatment care is utter most importance 24 hours post treatment as this is how long the micro channels are open for, hence the risk of infection is at its highest. Only the prescribed post care gels are to be used till wound healing is complete. Day two the skin will feel tight and dry, while day three flaking and dryness can be observed on the skin treatment area. By day 7 skin usually has returned to its pre-treatment state.

Cost: Treatments start from $150 per treatment

Did you know:

Skin needling can be used to help treat fine lines and wrinkles around the eye area & has become popular for around the peri oral (mouth) area. TGF beta 3 is found in when a fetus is in utero which enables scarless would healing, this growth factor is initiated and found post skin needling for up to 10 days after. Pinpoint bleeding is our end point when performing treatments to ensure we are getting the stimulation of growth factors & therefore this treatment is a great option for those with scarring whether acne or post surgically. This treatment can be performed on all skin colours (Fitzpatrick I-V) [3].

At the MyGenesis clinic we use the Skin Pen for our treatments which is a medical skin needling device that is FDA approved only available to those that are specially trained with the device. To book your skin needling consultation contact our reception team on 6282 1155.
