The Right Way to Clean Your Face

Cleansing your face is the most important first step in achieving healthy, beautiful skin. Using active skin care products can make such a difference but your technique is your secret weapon. Whilst it’s a relatively simple process, there are some insider tips we can share to really boost your technique and results.

Here are our five simple steps to correctly washing your face:

TIP ONE – Wash your hands

Before cleansing your face you should thoroughly wash your hands. Everyday we get grubby from the dust, dirt and impurities in our environment and to achieve a more thorough and effective cleanse we need to start with the basics.

TIP TWO – Take your time

Dirt, oil and makeup residue can get deeply embedded in the pores of your skin. Rather than being aggressive, you need to take your time and allow your cleanser to do its job properly.

You should aim to cleanse your skin for 30-60 seconds.

If you use a sonic vibration cleansing brush, look for one that has a pre-set option for 30 seconds and is designed to target deep-seated impurities and dislodge them from your skin. This works wonders for those suffering from blackheads and breakouts!

TIP THREE – Double cleanse

You should remove your makeup and sunscreen before cleaning your face. If you are wearing sunscreen or makeup during the day you should always perform a double cleanse prior to applying your night time treatment products. You will find that this will complement and enhance the effectiveness of your current skincare regime.

TIP FOUR – What to avoid

Cleansing is the foundation of healthy skin however it is important to have the right product for the job.

The cosmetic industry uses all kinds of chemicals in its products—many of them we do not find effective and may actually be irritating your skin.

The main culprits to avoid are:

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate
A common ingredient added to face wash to make it foam. It strips the skin and can be very irritating.
  • Fragrance
While fragrance seems harmless enough it can cause dryness and irritation and provides no benefit to the effectiveness of your face wash.
  • Oils
Many products contain petroleum and mineral oil-derived ingredients that can clog pores leading to breakouts.
  • Parabens
These are preservatives found in most cosmetics and skin care products. Some people find these cause sensitivity and irritation to their skin.
  • Alcohols
Alcohols can dry the skin and impair your protective barrier

TIP FIVE – Use in combination

Cleansing is the foundation of healthy skin and when used in conjunction with a medical-grade, active skincare regime it is the perfect way to complement and enhance your current treatment program.
