How to Maintain Your Skin After Laser Treatment: A Comprehensive Guide

Skin laser treatments are a game-changer for tackling a variety of skin concerns, from acne scars and wrinkles to hyperpigmentation and more. However, achieving clear, smooth, and glowing skin does not stop once you leave the clinic. In fact, how you care for your skin post-treatment plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the results.

Here is how you can ensure that your skin continues to thrive after a laser treatment:

1. Follow Your Dermal Clinician or Dermal Therapist’s Advice

This one is non-negotiable. Your dermal clinician or therapist will provide personalised instructions that are tailored to your specific skin type and the treatment you have received. Make sure to stick to the prescribed regimen and do not skip steps—whether it is specific creams, ointments, or lifestyle recommendations.

2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Laser treatments can leave your skin feeling dry or tight. Hydrating your skin is one of the most important steps to ensure optimal results. Use a gentle, hydrating moisturiser, and do not forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day to support skin recovery and help maintain that healthy glow.

Look for moisturisers that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides, which are fantastic for skin hydration and barrier repair.

3. Sun Protection Is Key

Post-treatment, your skin is more sensitive to UV rays. The last thing you want is to undo all your hard work by exposing your skin to the sun. Wearing a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher every day is crucial—whether you are inside or outside. Reapply every 2 hours if you are spending a lot of time outdoors.

Avoid direct sun exposure, especially in the first few weeks, and wear protective clothing (like hats or sunglasses) to shield your skin.

4. Be Gentle with Your Skin

After laser treatment, your skin may be more sensitive than usual. Avoid any harsh exfoliants or scrubs, and opt for a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. Avoid picking at your skin if it peels or flakes, as this can lead to scarring or pigmentation changes.

Stick to a skincare routine that’s simple, hydrating, and calming.

5. Avoid Hot Showers and Steam

Hot water can exacerbate irritation and inflammation after a laser treatment. Opt for lukewarm water when showering and avoid hot tubs, saunas, or steam rooms during your healing period. This helps to reduce unnecessary irritation and prevents your skin from becoming too inflamed.

6. Resist the Urge to Pick or Scratch

It might be tempting to scratch or pick at peeling skin or scabs, but this can cause scarring or infection. Allow the skin to heal naturally. If you have scabs or flaking skin, let them fall off on their own. If the sensation of itching or irritation becomes unbearable, consult your clinician for recommendations on soothing products.
