Acne: Lifestyle Factors

At My Genesis Clinic we have witnessed the close relationship between acne and lifestyle. If you suffer from persistent acne it may surprise you to know that your lifestyle choices have a significant impact on your breakouts. These factors are namely skincare and make up, stress, diet and exercise. Only when you understand and manage these factors will you begin to clear your acne and prevent future breakouts.

What you can’t change

Genetics play a large role in acne. If both parents had acne, you’re likely to develop it too. Unfortunately, you cannot change your genetics however looking at your family history can give you some clues as to how it may develop, the severity and when it may clear.

During puberty hormones increase which causes your oil glands to enlarge and produce more oil. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy, menopause and the use of the oral contraceptive pill can also affect oil production.

What you can change

OK, so you don’t have much say about what you’ve inherited from your family but here are some things you can take control of.

Skincare and Make Up

Acne isn’t caused from dirty skin and so that squeaky clean feeling you achieve through using harsh soaps and foaming products results in the production of more oil. The sulphates, alcohols and preservatives commonly found in most supermarket and over-the-counter products, tend to increase skin dehydration and trap dead skin cells, dirt and makeup in your pores. Active skin care is a better option.

The makeup you’re using could be making your acne significantly worse. Many formulations contain pore-clogging ingredients which block the follicles causing your pimples. We recommend that you avoid talc, artificial dyes and fragrances, especially in your foundation, blushers and lipsticks. We also recommend the use of daily SPF sunscreen protection.


When we experience stress, our adrenal gland goes into overdrive producing more hormones and therefore more acne. To reduce your stress levels ensure you get a good night’s sleep, exercise regularly and even try meditation or yoga.

Diet and Exercise

Heat, friction and sweating can exacerbate acne. We recommend cleansing after sport and exercise, and frequently cleaning your pillow cases, mobile phones, hats and similar items.

Recent studies suggest that high-glycaemic foods and dairy products play a major role in the development of acne. We recommend reducing your intake of sugar, processed foods and dairy, and increasing your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, good fats and protein.
