What you always wanted to ask about Injectables – Part 1

So you’ve read all about cosmetic injectables on our treatment page but still, you’ve got some questions. Am I too old for injectables? Can I get both anti-wrinkle and filler injectables? What if I don’t like the result? Let our Canberra Aesthetic Injectors answer your questions…

When will I see results and how long will it last? Dermal fillers for fuller lips, nose to mouth lines, marionette lines and cheeks gives immediate results and last 6 to 12 months. Anti-wrinkle injections for crow’s feet, forehead and frown lines can average 5 to 7 days for the anti-wrinkle injectable to take effect but optimal results may take up to 2 weeks to see, and they last 3 to 4 months. Take this into account when planning your appointment, allowing time before your big event for any bruising or swelling to subside, and enough time for the results to be optimal.

Do I have to see Dr Taylor? Our dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections are prescription medicines that are only available from a qualified medical professional. As a new client, you are required to book a consultation with Dr Taylor and one of our Aesthetic Injectors to determine your desired aesthetic outcome, discuss risks, develop a treatment plan and receive a ‘script’ (which lasts 12 months at My Genesis Clinic). You do not need to ‘fill your script’ at a pharmacy, these medicines are safely stored at our premises.

How does it feel? When there are needles going into skin and medicine being injected, there is going to be some discomfort. Anti-wrinkle injectables use very fine needles and very small amounts are injected, so the discomfort is minimal, though certain areas have more sting than others. Dermal fillers often include a numbing, anaesthetic medicine in the filler syringe, so again, the discomfort is kept to a minimum.

Can I have anti-wrinkle injections and dermal filler injections performed in the same appointment? Yes. Whilst anti-wrinkle injections paralyse the underlying facial muscle, dermal fillers plump the skin and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. They are often done at the same time, though in different parts of the face.

What if I feel faint or sick? Not only are you laying down for your injections, but your Aesthetic Injector is a fully qualified nurse. Who better to take care of you if you don’t feel so great?! Here at My Genesis Clinic, our Aesthetic Injectors are not only trained nurses, but they also work in our private hospital too, so their emergency skills are honed and ready to go if you feel wobbly or any adverse situations occur.

What if I don’t like the result? Don’t forget that it can take a couple of weeks for your optimal results to show, whether that is the full effect of muscle paralysis to take place with anti-wrinkle injections, or the bruising and swelling from dermal filler to settle. Hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers, like those used at My Genesis Clinic, can be dissolved. Anti-wrinkle injections have to wear off (which can take a few months). If you don’t like the result because you expected more of an effect, or feel that you need a tweak for balance, you may need to come back for a follow up appointment. You will be charged for the product used for touch-ups at subsequent appointments.

What is the ideal age to start? Can you be too old for injectables? People of all ages get cosmetic injectables. In your 20’s, you can plump your lips and shape your cheeks with dermal filler. In your 30’s anti-wrinkle injectables can be used to prevent deep wrinkles forming and over time, with consistent, regular treatments the muscles will learn to relax for longer. As you age into your 40’s and 50’s, dermal filler can replace lost volume in the face and anti-wrinkle injections used to banish those age lines. Into your 60’s and beyond, anti-wrinkle injectables can continuing being used, but dermal filler may no longer give you the result you want or may cost so much due to the amount required. At some point, dermal filler may best be replaced with fat grafting or a face lift.

Is a ‘package deal’ right for me? You have seen some seemingly great deals out there but worry that what they are offering may end up not being worth it, or that you will just be another patient on a conveyor belt! Developing a personalised treatment plan, tailor made to your face and your requirements is what our expert Aesthetic Injectors here at My Genesis Clinic do best. Never feel like you are getting ‘one size fits all’ treatments, or that you have to agree to more than you wanted (or something you didn’t want at all) just to get the most out of a package deal.

Can any nurse perform cosmetic injections? Whilst you must be a qualified nurse to inject anti-wrinkle injectables or dermal filler, not just any nurse should be doing your injections. Our My Genesis Aesthetic Injectors are nurses who have undergone further training and perform the injections under leadership and training from Dr Taylor.

OK, so now you are ready to book your initial consult, or call to arrange your top up treatment, with Fiona, Kathleen, Anne-Marie or Yvette. Call us on (02) 6282 1155.
