Those facial wipes you reach for when you just don’t have the time or energy to wash your face could be doing more harm than good.

The preservatives used to keep bacteria at bay in pre-moistened wipes have been found to irritate your skin leaving it looking red and feeling sensitive and tight. This affects your skins outer protective barrier and over time can lead to contact dermatitis.

Not cleansing properly or sleeping in your makeup can lead to skin sensitivities but also other problems such as eye infections. Besides wearing sun protection, cleansing is one of the most important steps to healthy skin.

Proper cleansing complements and enhances the effectiveness of your current skincare regime. It is important to have the right product for the job. Unfortunately, most supermarket or over the counter products do not contain sufficient active ingredients to be effective with many containing ingredients known to cause irritation or breakouts.

The main culprits to avoid are:

Sodium lauryl sulphate
A common ingredient added to face wash to make it foam. It strips the skin and can be very irritating.

Fragrance
While fragrance seems harmless enough it can cause dryness and irritation and provides no benefit to the effectiveness of your cleanser.

Oils
Many products contain petroleum and mineral oil-derived ingredients that can clog pores leading to breakouts.

Parabens
These are preservatives found in most cosmetics and skin care products. Some people find these cause sensitivity and irritation to their skin.

Alcohols
Alcohols can dry the skin and impair your protective barrier.
