Skin and Tonic with Sal – Where do I start with my skin?

I’ve got a problem! Where do I start?
Whether its preventing the inevitable or addressing a concern you’ve had for years you must start somewhere! And knowing where that place is can be a bit of an unknown.
Here at The CAPS Clinic we like to start with a full skin analysis prior to any treatment. The consultation involves a thorough conversation with one of our Dermal Clinicians – this lets us understand your concern before we take a look at your skin. Looking at your skin […]

Skin and Tonic With Sal – Meet Sal

Hi! I’m Sal Mackenzie, a Dermal Clinician at The CAPS Clinic. Welcome to my blog!

I came to the CAPS Clinic in 2007 as a 22 year old with a passion for skincare and a thirst for knowledge! I’ve completed a Bachelor of Health Science in Clinical Dermal Therapies (with the amazing support of the clinic) and I continue to attend conferences and seminars to ensure I stay up-to-date with what’s going on in our ever-changing industry. As a teen I suffered with ‘bad skin’, this […]

Frosted Away

It’s called stubborn fat for a reason: no matter how much you eat healthy and exercise, it’s virtually impossible to lose those annoying muffin tops and love handles.
We often see patients who come for liposuction to remove stubborn love handles or fatty deposits on the stomach or inner thighs, but sometimes surgery can be an expensive and excessive option. There had to be a more practical solution and now we have found it!

It’s called CoolSculpting and it’s offered exclusively in Canberra by The CAPS Clinic […]

Don’t Be A Victim Of Diversion

Can you tell the difference between these two products?  At first glance, neither could we!
While these products may look the same, diverted products are those that come from unauthorized distributors and individuals and can be expired, counterfeit or contaminated leading to skin irritation or no result.  CAPS is proud to be an Authorised Professional Partner of CosMedix.  Purchasing products from CAPS ensures you are receiving:

the BEST product for your skin
Fresh formulas that have passed rigourous quality control testing
professional consultation and recommendations tailored to address your unique […]

Peel Back A Layer

Inflammation is the central cause of all skin conditions – so why do we use products that cause further inflammation?

Have you ever read the ingredient listing on the products we put on our face!  If we all really understood the jargon and the impact some of these ingredients were, we would never put anything on our face.

Did you know that at the core of our skin conditions (such as acne, hypersensitive skin, rosacea and photodamage) is actually inflammation?  As we use many ‘off the shelf’ […]

The Skin Revolution

The CAPS Clinic is excited to introduce a revolution in non-invasive exfoliation – The DermaSweep® Microdermabrasion system. This unique patented technology allows us to offer our clients not only an excellent smoothing of the epidermis, but also an infusion of a selected topical serum following the exfoliation process. The infusion, which is purposely selected for the individual, leaves the skin hydrated and protected rather than raw and vulnerable.

This unique treatment utilises brush-like technology which means it does not involve messy crystals or unpredictable suction levels. […]

Fact or Fiction: Expensive Skin Care Is Better – FICTION

There is an overwhelming array of readily available over-the-counter products, all claiming to make us look more youthful and provide solutions to problem skins.  So, how do you know which product is better and choose the right one for your skin?

Well, it all comes down to the types of ingredients utilised and not the expensive packaging and marketing campaigns.  Unnecessary ingredients such as perfumes, fillers or preservatives contained within some skincare products can cause inflammation and damage your skin over time.

Generally, products where the company […]

Radical Reversal

Have you ever wondered why metal rusts when exposed to air and sliced apple turns brown?  This process is called oxidation and can occur in all molecular structures including the skin. We are all familiar with the term ‘free radicals’ but what role does this play in relation to oxidation and what does this process have to do with the skin.

Oxidised cells are prone to free radical formation, which can injure the cells, damaging the DNA.  When a cell’s DNA changes it becomes mutated. It […]

Ablative Answers

Ablative lasers have been touted as the magic solution to all skin conditions. Whilst we acknowledge they have their place as a tool in the skin rejuvenation market, we do not believe ablative treatments should be used in the treatment of all skin conditions.  This belief is based on 14 years spent researching, trialling and testing a range of all types of ablative lasers.

At CAPS, our philosophy in selecting our skin treatments and machines is simple:

If the treatment or skin care meets these criteria then […]

Hair Removal :: 5 Star Difference

We have all heard the term “pain-free” but how realistic is this when it comes to hair removal?

The reality is- when using a laser or light therapy treatment to destroy unwanted hair the follicle must be heated to the point where is destroyed !  Even specifically targeting the follicle there will always be collateral heat to the tissue surrounding the follicle and this equates to pain!

A pain free treatment is something we have never promoted in our clinic because put simply, we did not believe […]

Loving Your Skin

Makeup and cosmetics have been an integral part of a woman’s life for thousands of years, from the first cosmetics that the ancient Egyptians used to the scientifically advanced products of today. As we age, we imagine how wonderful it would be to turn back the clock and see that;

Just because we are getting older doesn’t mean we need to look it!

Today rather than just covering up the imperfections within our skin we can get to the root of the problem and address overall skin health, […]

Quick-Fix Myth

In today’s fast-paced world we all lead very busy lives. In an age where everything is so accessible, and technology is constantly improving we’ve come to expect that things will happen quickly. In some cases, this is not always a good thing.

Sometimes you have to be patient, especially when it comes to skin rejuvenation as a lot of the concerns you have, are an accumulation of years of damage. So even though this technology is effective we can not expect our skin to be fixed […]

The Liquid Facelift

Reading through the cosmetic magazines I am dismayed to find the promises being made to unsuspecting patients of the benefits of a ‘liquid facelift’. It is difficult to comment about this new fad without sounding like I am protecting my own territory, however, I also feel it is important for patients to understand exactly what they are getting themselves into and what are their alternatives.

At CAPS we inject three different types of anti-wrinkle products. All of these products are well researched and supported by their suppliers. […]
