Removal of all skin and tissue from the belly button to the pubis with a high cut scar, which can still be hidden by underwear.

If you put your thumb in your belly button and your fingers above your pubis, everything you hold is removed making the abdomen look shorter and the legs look longer!

'Patients often come to me requesting the removal of a bulging stomach with liposuction.  In some cases this is possible but in most, specifically following child birth or weight loss this is bad idea!  Liposuction can only remove subcutaneous fat and does not tighten the skin. In this situation patients will need a much more invasive procedure to achieve the desired results.  Specifically they require an abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty over the years has been presented in many forms from the simple excision of the excess flap of skin to a full open procedure repairing  torn muscles and removing excess fat and skin in a contoured way to produce a flatter tighter stomach and restoring core strength.  I am a great believer in the latter procedure.

After childbirth there is often a separation of the rectus muscles in the midline which leads to bulging of the abdomen on standing, making the tummy look bigger than it is. The midline separation, known as a diastasis can also lead to post pregnancy back pain, poor posture, loss of core strength and pelvic floor weakness. Thin women can have large diastases which makes them look pregnant even when they aren’t. Such tummies are often hidden under voluminous clothes which also help hide wrinkly post pregnancy skin.

Repair of the diastasis must be the cornerstone of the abdominoplasty procedure and repaired properly results in a functional improvement that often surprises many patients. Liposuction is performed at the same time as the skin excision and this, with the muscle repair, creates a firm taught abdomen and a better waist for a more curvaceous shape.

Previously I would perform this procedure primarily for the aesthetic outcome but more and more I am finding the real reason to commit to an abdominoplasty is to restore core strength and function.  Imagine a life without back pain or light bladder leakage!'

A CHANGED LIFE - ROBYN'S AMAZING STORY

I am 44, I have 3 children (all cesareans) the youngest 9.

Over the past at least 6 years I have been suffering with pain and discomfort in my lower back, right shoulder, between my shoulders, I have a hip that shifts and makes my hamstring pull so tight that I am unable to walk properly and neck pain that was unrelenting, making me feel constantly tired, unmotivated, unable to think. It effected my work, I couldn't concentrate and I made mistakes my family suffered as well, I was miserable.

I have seen my GP, several Physio's, Chiropractors, a masseuse and a Sports medicine Dr.  I have had x-rays a series of therapeutic massages, an injection into my neck under CT, exercised and done Pilates and to manage the pain been prescribed Celebrex.  There is nothing specific that stands out except that my symptoms show lack of core strength.

I did everything that these practitioners suggested but frustratingly there was only minimal improvement.  It was effecting every aspect of my life, my time and a great deal of money was being spent on trying to get better.

Christmas 2010 I spoke to someone who had just has an abdominoplasty, after talking to her I found that she had very similar symptoms to me.  I mentioned this to my Sports medicine Dr who sent me for and ultrasound, this showed a diastasis of 2cm and no hernia, the attending Dr said that he had seen worse.  Back to the Sports medicine Dr who said that he didn't think I needed surgery but would support my decision for a second opinion with Dr Taylor.

I went ahead with the surgery late June, the diastasis was larger than the ultrasound had shown and I had a hernia.

Since the surgery my back pain, shoulder pain x 2 and hip issues have gradually disappeared.  My neck pain now does not require pain relief and I have thrown my Celebrex and Iburofen in the bin, I no longer need them.  My current Physio believes that the neck pain I was experiencing would not have gone away without the surgery

I feel as though I am getting my life back, I am walking regularly and have started Pilates again and now I actually feel like exercising and being active.

Just recently I have felt as though there is something missing, it's taken me a little while to work it out.......it's my pain.

GETTING FIVE STAR RESULTS - WITHOUT THE PAIN!

We have all heard the term “pain-free” but how realistic is this when it comes to hair removal?  

The reality is- when using a laser or light therapy treatment to destroy unwanted hair the follicle must be heated to the point where is destroyed !  Even specifically targeting the follicle there will always be collateral heat to the tissue surrounding the follicle and this equates to pain!   

A pain free treatment is something we have never promoted in our clinic because put simply, we did not believe it was possible to produce an effective result without it!

All this has changed with the introduction of the latest edition to the CAPS Clinic family.  The Lightsheer Duet Diode Laser.  The new Lightsheer Laser delivers the same excellent laser wavelength (810nm) that we started out with back in 1999, however a new feature of this laser is the method of how this energy is delivered to the follicle.

Gone are the days where you needed a topical anaesthetic cream or ice to make an effective treatment more tolerable.  The Lightsheer’s incredible vacuum suction head delivers the same level of effectiveness without the need to cool or numb the skin.  In short CAPS can now provide both effectiveness and the reality of a pain free treatment.

The other amazing innovation of the Lightsheer’s new hand piece is the size.  The previous lightsheer handpiece allowed a spot size of no more than 9mm2!  This spot size is a drag – taking literally hours to treat larger areas. I had been promising myself for years that one day I would find the time for a proper, serious skin care program.

On a friend’s recommendation I booked an appointment with Carly, one of the dermal clinicians at CAPS. Together we planned out a treatment program that would address some long-standing problems I had with my skin.
