Plastic Surgeon Vs Cosmetic Surgeon

I am often asked the difference between a Cosmetic Surgeon and a Specialist Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon. Understandably there is a lot of confusion surrounding this matter and patients are often provided with conflicting information.

Doctors can only become specialised surgeons once they have completed several years of strictly monitored surgical training. A typical example of what a doctor must undertake to become a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon is summarised below.

1. Complete a 6 year University Degree (MBBS), then spend 1 year as an Intern in […]

Dr Alastair Taylor Awarded Best ASAPS Presentation

In July 2013, Dr Alastair Taylor was awarded Best Paper for his presentation of his breakthrough abdominoplasty research to the delegates of the Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Port Douglas, QLD. This was one of six papers that Dr Taylor delivered at the conference detailing a range of technical and education breakthroughs.

As the authoritative source since 1977, the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has been one of the world’s leading organisations in cosmetic surgery education and research. Members are all Fellows of […]

Beating The Bulge – Hernia Treatment

The very nature of the abdominoplasty surgery allows a more exposed repair which is stronger and more reliable than the traditional hernia treatment methods. Operative exposure of the abdominal wall during an abdominoplasty allows easy reduction of the hernia and the extending of the muscle repair from the chest to the pubis, removes the weak midline problem. With the tension shared equally down the abdomen in a muscle repair, no plastic mesh is required. Hernias can also protrude from the umbilicus (an “outy” belly button). […]

Dr Taylor Presents at ISAPS in Santiago

On the 26th of February, Dr Taylor presented his breakthrough abdominoplasty research to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons Congress in Santiago Chile. The ISAPS is an international society dedicated to continued education, improvement of technology and techniques, and upholding a strong ethical framework for plastic surgery around the world.  Dr Taylor’s presentation was widely received and applauded.

Dr Taylor explains some of the presentation. “Abdominoplasty over the years has been presented in many forms from the simple excision of the excess flap of skin […]

Getting to the Core of the Problem

There are many reasons women come to me for a tummy tuck. Often they just don’t like the look and feel of their abdomen after pregnancy, or they’ve lost weight and are concerned by excess skin. Others are confused by bulges that have no apparent cause.

It’s a bit of a lottery how abdomens fare after pregnancy. Some women have stretchmarks while others can get through the process without a single one. There are also women for whom pregnancy can result in hernias. For whatever reason […]

Hair Removal :: 5 Star Difference

We have all heard the term “pain-free” but how realistic is this when it comes to hair removal?

The reality is- when using a laser or light therapy treatment to destroy unwanted hair the follicle must be heated to the point where is destroyed !  Even specifically targeting the follicle there will always be collateral heat to the tissue surrounding the follicle and this equates to pain!

A pain free treatment is something we have never promoted in our clinic because put simply, we did not believe […]

Loving Your Skin

Makeup and cosmetics have been an integral part of a woman’s life for thousands of years, from the first cosmetics that the ancient Egyptians used to the scientifically advanced products of today. As we age, we imagine how wonderful it would be to turn back the clock and see that;

Just because we are getting older doesn’t mean we need to look it!

Today rather than just covering up the imperfections within our skin we can get to the root of the problem and address overall skin health, […]

Fact or Fiction: Any Doctor Can Perform Surgery

Cosmetic surgeons may learn specific procedures but are not drawing on this wide skill base that has been taught through late night trauma, complex cancer surgery in a compromised patient, and caring for critically ill patient. Cosmetic surgeons usually operate out of day surgeries and often lack the admitting rights to hospital if a problem needs to be dealt with or if someone needs to stay longer than a day or overnight.  They may have to send complications to a public hospital Accident & Emergency (A&E) […]

A New Hope

In August 2011 I was approached by David Berg from Berg Physiotherapy. Unbeknownst to me, David had arranged for three patients he had been working with to undertake an abdominoplasty with me.

Aside from the obvious cosmetic improvements of an abdominoplasty, I have always been aware of the ‘added benefits’ being improvement in lower back and neck pain, stronger core for exercising and an improved sexlife. But I was not aware of the issue of incontinence.

Post pregnancy over 40% of women experience some ‘light bladder leakage’ […]

Quick Fix Myth

In today’s fast-paced world we all lead very busy lives. In an age where everything is so accessible, and technology is constantly improving we’ve come to expect that things will happen quickly. In some cases, this is not always a good thing.

Sometimes you have to be patient, especially when it comes to skin rejuvenation as a lot of the concerns you have, are an accumulation of years of damage. So even though this technology is effective we can not expect our skin to be fixed […]

The Liquid Facelift

Reading through the cosmetic magazines I am dismayed to find the promises being made to unsuspecting patients of the benefits of a ‘liquid facelift’. It is difficult to comment about this new fad without sounding like I am protecting my own territory, however, I also feel it is important for patients to understand exactly what they are getting themselves into and what are their alternatives.

At CAPS we inject three different types of products. All of these products are well researched and supported by their suppliers. Used […]
